Gilbert History
Gilbert was incorporated in July of 1920 on land that was originally owned by William "Bobby" Gilbert. Shortly after the turn of the century, Arizona Eastern Railway built a railway through Gilbert's property, and the town grew around it. The town of Gilbert was historically a very agricultural town, even being known as the "Hay Capital of the World" through most of the 1920s. In the 1970s, Gilbert underwent some developments, and the city started to transition from a rural, agricultural town to a more populous, urban city.
